For Anna, working at KPMG Law means helping to shape legal issues within a strong global network. Her work in the area of Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) is characterized by complex negotiations, strategic decisions and the implementation of forward-looking solutions. For Anna, who studied law at the University of Cologne and holds a doctorate in international law, this is an ideal working environment.
Anna, how did you decide to join KPMG Law?
I’ve always been someone who couldn’t sit still. I wanted a job that would challenge me and allow me to constantly learn new things. KPMG Law immediately caught my eye because of the wide range of projects. Here I have the opportunity to work in different areas of law. This suited me perfectly because I need a lot of variety and want to be challenged by my tasks.
Which project did you particularly like?
One of the most challenging and exciting projects I have worked on so far was the sale of the electricity division of a utility company. A mammoth project that lasted two years. The core of our success lay in the trusting relationship with the client, whom we supported closely from the outset. The contract negotiations were particularly fascinating, bringing together a wide variety of experts from different areas such as finance, energy, regulatory law and tax. What makes this project unforgettable for me is the well thought-out organization and the dedicated team. Our cooperation was based on appreciation and respect. This is generally true for working together at KPMG Law: we listen to each other, value the knowledge of each team member – and we laugh together.
I am currently involved in an equally exciting project: the sale of a bank. This mandate is also highly complex. There are many interfaces to connect. Banking law is a regulated area, so communication with the supervisory authorities is particularly important. After four years, we are now nearing completion – proof of the scale of the challenges we are mastering.
You can tell that you are passionate about what you do. What exactly makes it so exciting for you?
It’s the variety of tasks. One day I’m managing an international M&A transaction and coordinating teams across borders. The next day, I’m advising a Berlin start-up in its first financing round from a completely different industry. This range of experience that I gain, plus the exchange with my colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines – that makes my work at KPMG Law incredibly enriching.
Start-ups have special needs. How do you deal with them?
Start-ups invigorate the economy, provide new impetus – and deserve support. Together with other colleagues, for example, I advise young founders as part of KPMG’s own ‘Venture Services’ initiative. In this context, we are on site at various events and get involved with start-ups, connecting them with investors and companies – always with the aim of creating added value for the start-up ecosystem. I really enjoy being involved here. I really appreciate the exchange with young people and often gain as many new perspectives as they do.
You are now a Senior Manager in Legal Deal Advisory. How will your path continue?
I strive for partnership. KPMG Law actively supports me and other female managers with initiatives such as ‘Women@KPMG Law’ and ‘Female Mentoring’. These are programs in which women support and advance each other. I also have a mentor who is on hand to answer my questions and support me in achieving my goals. Further training and personal development are an important topic at KPMG Law. Several times a year, we are encouraged to attend specialist training courses. In addition, KPMG Law offers a wide range of training courses that go beyond specialist skills. These include soft skills such as team leadership and acquisition techniques. I’m looking forward to learning and everything that’s to come.
The best prospects. In conclusion: How would you describe KPMG Law as an employer to potential applicants?
I can realize myself. And there is never any risk of me getting trapped in routines.
KPMG Law is like my teenage daughter: I love spending time with her, she challenges me and it’s always exciting to see how things develop.
I really, really enjoy working in such an activating environment. I can realize myself. And there’s never any risk of me getting stuck in a routine. Every day brings new challenges and new perspectives that help me grow. The interaction between different disciplines always gives me the opportunity to think outside the box. For me personally, all of this clearly distinguishes KPMG Law from typical large law firms.
