Financial regulatory law: KPMG Law wins Andreas Wieland

KPMG Law Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH strengthens its legal advice to banks and financial services companies with Dr. Andreas Wieland. As of October 1, Wieland will complement KPMG Law’s range of services as a partner from the Frankfurt office, particularly in regulatory challenges related to digitalization.

Wieland joins from White & Case, where he worked since 2013 and was responsible as partner for financial regulatory law at the Frankfurt office since 2016. Prior to that, he spent a good ten years at Shearman & Sterling. In addition to advising on issues of German and European financial regulatory law, Wieland’s expertise includes M&A and outsourcing transactions with financially regulated entities and the related regulatory aspects as well as restructuring and resolution issues and legal issues related to the digitalization of financial institutions. His clients include leading German and international banks and financial service providers as well as companies in the real economy.

“Digitization, FinTechs, increased compliance and governance requirements – the financial sector is in the midst of an upheaval that must and will be accompanied by regulatory law,” says Mathias Oberndörfer, Managing Director of KPMG Law. “With Andreas Wieland, we are gaining a high-caliber expert in the field of financial regulatory law who will both support us in fully handling mandates in this area together with our colleagues from KPMG and further deepen our interlocking in the global KPMG Law network. This reinforcement is another significant step in our successful multi-disciplinary practice strategy, through which KPMG and KPMG Law together provide legal and business advice.”

Andreas Wieland expects his move to result in increased synergies: “The digital transformation of the financial sector in particular requires close integration of financial regulatory aspects with the technical implementation and process-related implementation of new solutions. With an integrated and multidisciplinary one-stop-shop approach, KPMG is breaking new and innovative ground here. In addition, KPMG Law is extremely strong in the area of legal tech – a major advantage especially in the financial sector, where digital solutions and business models are clearly on the rise.”
